The Berici hills stand today as the green heart of the Veneto region, a rural environment of extraordinary beauty which, in addition to magnificent man made works such as its “Ville Venete”, hamlets and towns, knows how to amaze with its landscapes, often still unspoilt nature, and the many opportunities it offers to those who wish to spend even just a weekend of relaxation and fun. The quality of the wine from the Berici hills is beyond question: entire generations of winegrowers have passed down an uncommon wealth with jealous care. The Berici hills span approximately 40,000 hectares, of which about 3,000 are in viticulture. The Consortium was formed in 1982 with the goal to defend, protect, enhance and improve the production and trade of “Colli Berici” D.O.C. wines. Recently it has approved the new production rules as a result of which certain types of wine or their versions may bear the denomination, and have become symbols of the territory, for example Carmenère and even more so the Reserve version of Tai Rosso. The characteristic vine of this splendid territory is the Tai Rosso; the eponymous wine that derives from it has long been waiting for a new name whilst the wine that is produced in the area of more ancient origin, amongst the hills of Barbarano Vicentino, takes the name “Barbarano”. This is a truly special red, ruby in colour, with an intense aroma, a fruity and floral flavour, dry and well-balanced.
The denomination Vicenza is reserved to wines derived from vines cultivated in a vast area that goes from the hilly Berica area to the south of the city of Vicenza to the foothills in the northeast of Vicenza province, so as to allow an enlarged action of protection. The heart of production remains the area of the Berici hills and the Agno valley, and is distributed both in the hilly part where the limestone nature of the rock has evolved in soils with red clays rich in shells particularly suited to viticulture, and in the surrounding valleys which are often characterised by deep soils. The denomination is also concerned with the other valleys of the province of Vicenza: those of Legra, Astico, and of the river Brenta with its soft slopes and rich alluvial plains. In total it comprises, in whole or in part, more than 50 municipalities. The complex morphology of such a vast territory generates a remarkable variety of local microclimates that favour the characteristics of fine red wines as well as elegant and refined whites
“Colli Berici” wines must be obtained with at least 85% of the grapes coming from the corresponding vines, and the remaining 15% from other vines as established by the production rules. The production of “Colli Berici” Cabernet (and its Reserve version) may be made, jointly or severally, with grapes from the Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère varieties. The Denominazione di Origine Controllata (Denomination of Controlled Origin) wine “Colli Berici” Spumante (classic method) must be made from a blend of grapes derived from vineyards entered in the register of wines: Chardonnay measuring not less than 50%; and Pinot Bianco, Pinot Nero, jointly or severally, up to a maximum of 50%. The D.O.C. wine “Colli Berici” Barbarano or “Colli Berici” Tocai Rosso di Barbarano is obtained from grapes of the Tai Rosso vine cultivated in the area of most ancient tradition, corresponding to the territory of the municipalities of Barbarano Vicentino, Villaga, Mossano, Nanto, Castegnero and Longare. Wines designated as Reserve must be subjected to a compulsory aging period of at least 24 months.
In accordance with the rules of production, wines of the D.O.C. “Vicenza” must be obtained from grapes coming from the corresponding vines for at least 85%; non-aromatic grapes of the same colour from other varieties recommended or authorised for the province of Vicenza may also contribute up to a maximum of 15%. Characteristic elements among the wines of the D.O.C. “Vicenza” are the “Rosso” and “Novello” versions, both obtained using a minimum of 50% Merlot grapes and the remainder from other redberried grapes. Moreover there are also “Reserve” versions of both these wines, and spumante versions of Chardonnay, Garganego and Moscato.
The characteristic grapes of the territory are the Tai Rosso (that until some time ago was called Tocai Rosso) and the Garganega, an autochthonous grape from the provinces of Vicenza and Verona. The Tai Rosso is the most famous and exclusive vine from the Berici hills, from which is obtained a noble wine for the whole meal, which goes well with sophisticated first course, and the finest cold meats. It is also excellent with other traditional dishes such as raw ham, game and water fowl, and the inevitable polenta and salt cod. Being cultivated in strong, deep and well-fertilised soils, the aroma is intense and distinctive, the flavour bitterish and well-balanced, with a pleasant and lingering aftertaste.
The great international varieties such as Sauvignon, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot, Pinot Nero, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère are the most cultivated grapes in the diverse territory of the D.O.C. “Vicenza”. Alongside these, however, and still of considerable importance both in terms of presence and quality of the product obtained, are some autochthonous varieties, including the Garganega. This variety is characterised by its small aromatic legacy of which almond and white flowers are the most crisp; it benefits from a very long biological development, so as to reach maturity in October; its skin is tough and particularly yellow (almost red) when it is ripe. It doesn’t have a preponderant acidity, but rather an interesting balance of extracts and sugars. The Raboso, among other typical vines such as the Manzoni Bianco crossbreed, the Moscato Bianco and/or the Moscato Giallo, are also vines that contribute to the rich variety of viticulture in the region
