The hills of Asolo and the unmistakable Montello are the outposts of the foothills of the Marca Trevigiana. The vineyards are the predominant and qualifying part of a landscape unique in its genre, blending art and nature, culture and tradition. Asolo is the “capital” of this small world loved and sought-after for centuries. Here the history is visible in the medieval villages, the Renaissance villas, in the massif of Monte Grappa, and on the banks of the river Piave. The wine is the ambassador of the territory, chiefly the Prosecco, which obtained the D.O.C.G (Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin) in spring 2009. The D.O.C. Montello and Colli Asolani comprises the whole territory of the municipality of Monfumo and part of that of Asolo, Caerano S.Marco, Castelcucco, Cavaso del Tomba, Cornuda, Crocetta del Montello, Fonte, Giavera del Montello, Maser, Montebelluna, Nervesa della Battaglia, Possagno del Grappa, S. Zenone degli Ezzelini and Volpago del Montello.
The Asolo Prosecco D.O.C.G. is the historic wine of the Montello and Colli Asolani D.O.C. Its production must comply with precise and strict rules. The result is a wine that, quite rightly, is considered to be top of the range. Of a more or less intense straw-like yellow colour with a characteristic fruity aroma and with a slight almond taste, it is produced in the Spumante, Sparkling and Still versions. It has a dry, wellbalanced and lively taste. Served chilled, it is suitable for any occasion. The most important quality red wines with personality, such as the Cabernet, a noble wine that is rendered even better with aging, originate in the D.O.C. territory. The Cabernet is vinous and intense, very pleasant and characteristic. Of ample body, it is correctly tannic and well-balanced. Slightly herbaceous if young, it is best served at a temperature of 18°C, and suitable for the most important occasions. Merlot is an excellent young wine, intense and distinctive, of perfect consistency that becomes a great wine if aged. The Rosso, of a ruby red colour that tends towards garnet with aging, has a characteristic intense and pleasant scent, with ethereal tendencies if aged, and a tangy, robust, slightly herbaceous and well-balanced taste. Rosso, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Bianco are also produced in the “Superior” versions. Pinot and Chardonnay are wines of excellent quality, especially in the Still version. Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco can also be produced in the Spumante version. The Carmenère is a red with a mellow taste, fullbodied, balanced and of a good persistence. The Venegazzù, which owes its name to the locality of Volpago del Montello, is also a full-bodied and well-structured red
The “Montello and Colli Asolani” denomination” is reserved for wines obtained from grapes that come from vines consisting of at least 85% of the following varieties: Prosecco, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Cabernet, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The D.O.C. prides itself of wines produced from single autochthonous vine types such as Recantina, Bianchetta and Manzoni Bianco, while the top of range of the local production remains the Asolo Prosecco Superior D.O.C.G., the most characteristic and loved among the wines of the hilly Marca Trevigiana. The Montello D.O.C.G. is a grape variety of only Bordolese vines. It has a ruby red color, a characteristic intense scent, and a pleasant, pungent, robust, slightly herbaceous and well-balanced taste; it can well be classified as “Superior” if aged. Pinot and Chardonnay are also excellent quality wines especially in the Still version, but can also be produced in the Spumante version. The Carmènere is a red wine with a mellow taste, full-bodied, balanced and of a good persistence. The Venegazzù, which owes its name to the locality of Volpago del Montello, is also obtained only from Bordolese vines that have found an exceptional habitat in this area and that yield wines of great quality and personality. Another historic vine is the Manzoni Bianco, which bears the name of the professor of the Istituto Enologico of Conegliano, who selected it in the 1930s. Bianchetta has been mentioned since the 16th century, and as it matured earlier, was used to “civilise” the Prosecco, especially in cold years.
